Manchester United are considering trying to re-sign David De Gea on a short-term deal - less than six months before he leaves the club at the end of his contract.

The 32-year-old De Gea spent 12 successful years at Old Trafford, making 545 appearances, and left the Red Devils this summer when his contract expired. The Spaniard is popular in the dressing room and some United players are unhappy with the goalkeeper's treatment.

Now, according to The Sun , United are considering bringing the free agent back amid concerns over a lack of replacements for Cameroon's Andre Onana when he takes part in the Africa Cup of Nations in January. Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindil are United's other senior goalkeepers but have both failed to feature so far this season.

Manchester United were allegedly caught off guard after Onana reversed his decision to retire from international football. The 27-year-old confirmed the decision ahead of Cameroon's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi in September, explaining it was due to his "unshakable love and attachment to his homeland".

If Onana is selected for Cameroon, he could miss up to eight United games, including the Premier League tie against Tottenham Hotspur. The former Ajax goalkeeper has had a rocky start at Manchester United since his £47.2million move from Inter Milan in the summer, but he did create a moment of magic in their Champions League clash on Tuesday, scoring their first goal Saved a penalty kick in the second half of the game. -0 victory over Copenhagen.

Although Onana's predecessor left United in July after issuing an emotional statement, he is yet to sign for another club. Reports emerged last month that De Gea would consider an abrupt retirement if he did not receive an offer to become first choice at a "big" club.

De Gea has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and turned down other offers during the summer transfer window, but is biding his time to see if a suitable offer comes forward. Incredibly, The Sun also claims that United asked De Gea not to sign until a move to Onana was agreed.

It is unclear whether De Gea would be willing to return to Old Trafford, especially if he wants to be number two when Onana returns from the Africa Cup of Nations. Onana has started all 13 competitive games for United so far this season, conceding 20 goals and keeping four clean sheets in the process.
